Hi I'm Nicole from DoMyOwn.com. Do your bug battles in your home or structure seem endless? You may be missing a piece in your pest control: insect growth regulators.

What are they? Insect growth regulators are like “birth control” for bugs. Insects, like any other living organisms, go through various stages of development, from eggs to larvae, pupae, and finally, adult forms. Insect growth regulators, commonly known as IGRs, are synthetic or naturally occurring compounds that disrupt this life cycle. Some of the most common pests targeted by IGR's include roaches, fleas, ticks, ants, mosquitoes, and some pantry pests.

One of the greatest advantages of insect growth regulators is their long-lasting impact. IGRs have a residual effect, meaning the product is effective for an extended amount of time, disrupting the pests' life cycle and preventing future generations from developing into troublesome adults. This makes IGRs a sustainable solution for persistent pest problems. They can ensure long-term control and reduce the need for frequent applications. Insect growth regulators offer a more targeted approach than other pesticides. They act specifically on the developmental stages of the pest you are treating for.

Since IGR's address only the problem of reproduction but do not actually kill the adult insect, it is always a good idea to use other pest control products along with the IGR for ultimate population control. Liquid IGRS and liquid Insecticides can also be tank mixed in one single application. Always check each product label prior to mixing to ensure mixing compatibility. Your specific application will depend on the product you are using. As a general rule, you should apply your IGR in places where you have observed pests or where pests hide.

The ideal time to treat your home with an IGR to prevent bothersome infestations is when you are seeing pests in your home. IGRs can also be preventatively for pests like fleas or mosquitoes, or when you have seen large populations of pests based upon history. can come in an insecticide concentrate, aerosol spray, bait, and other forms for versatile application. Residual, or the amount of time the product will last or be effective, will depend on the product you have chosen. Whatever form you are using, always read the product label carefully for ideal application.
